Congress Opening, Dr. Krzysztof Chmielewski MOI, Dr. Alessandro Devigus
09:10-10:00
The main purpose of dental photography is documentation. A maximum of information has to be recorded under reproducible conditions. There must be standardization of the clinical camera, the associated equipment and the formating and lighting of those intra- and extra-oral views used in dental photography. The Standards described in the 1980's still are valid but needs to be updated and adapted to new technologies and procedures. The lecture wants to summarize the latest findings and give some suggestions on equipment, settings and protocols. By standardizing the photographic conditions the photographs produced will be comparable to each other, even if successive photographs are taken at long time intervals and by different photographers. Only in this way can dental photography be used as a valuable aid to documentation.
10:00-11:00
Digital photography has long been considered an integral tool of modern dentistry. For multitude of reasons, such as medico legal, patient communication, information transfer between the clinic and the laboratory, educational documentation and others - utilizing the digital dental camera system should be efficient as well as punctuate, tailored to each treatment modality and artistic when indicated.
Unlike in the past where dental cameras utilized a ring or double sided flashes only, the present systems allow for a variety of different images that can and should be matched to each specific indication. The lecture will elaborate on the practical factors that any dentist and technician can understand and implement to produce high quality images for every indication, with basic, simple to use means. Practical tips and techniques will be shared with numerous clinical examples and simplified protocols, that can be implemented in every day and every clinical practice.

Photography is powerful in dentistry, its numerous applications such as diagnosis and treatment planning, legal documentation, publishing and lecturing has made digital photography a standard of care in modern dental practices.
Till few months the DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras were the only way in dentistry to take high quality macro images.
Recently, smartphones have come a long way in digital photography due to recent technology development.
The purpose of this lecture is to demonstrate the capacity of these devices to take high quality dental images for our daily documentation and to present a new device for mobile photography: the Smile Lite MDP, which is very simple to use and allows to take high quality dental pictures with mobile phones.
Those pictures are useful in different types of documentation and communication, in a feasible teachable and repeatable way, by everyone and for everyday practice.

In the last years we have incorporated photography into our daily life as a basic tool for communication and dental analysis. In order to get the most out of this tool it is important to understand how light behaves and how we can use it to obtain the information we need.
Within all the options of dental photography we will focus on developing three of them. We will review the different lighting systems with which we can observe information on the surface texture of teeth and restorative materials, using different types of lights and light modifiers, understanding the difference between hard light and soft light. In a second part we will talk about fluorescence and transillumination, and how to perform these less frequent techniques but which give us extra interesting information, especially when observing how the different restorative materials are mimicked in the mouth.

Dental macro-photography is a powerful tool for communication, marketing, and learning, but what about micro-photography?
The objective of this lecture is to understand how the focus stacking technique works. You will learn about the equipment and the process to obtain images with great details and high capacity of digital amplification of up to 300%. High resolution and detailed photographs help in understanding the morphology of the natural dentition but also to astonish and teach the hidden world in the dental materials and other objects.

09:00-10:00
Dental photography can be used as a means of communication between the dentist and the technician. Ideally, the technician who is going to fabricate the restoration should see the patient and make the appropriate shade selection. However, the great majority of restorations are fabricated by offsite technicians who do not have access to the patients. Photography provides a means to bridge the "gap" between the patient and the technician regarding shade and surface character.
In this presentation, award-winning professional photographer and ceramist, Naoki Aiba, CDT will address what dentists and technicians need to know about photography for shade communication. Number of clinical cases will be presented to illustrated practical applications.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Describe the method of photographing Shade View photos and their use for shade analysis and virtual blue print.
2. Illustrate the Photo Protocol by case designs.
3. Describe the workflow
10:00-11:00
Over the last decade there has been profound interest in newer photographic illumination techniques aimed at increasing the accuracy and objectivity of dental diagnostic ability, shade evaluation and laboratory communication.
In order to minimise the user-dependent error in clinical practice, it is necessary to develop reproducible imaging modalities and objective image analysis methods. Reflective cross polarized light photography mitigates unwanted specular reflections and hot spots in addition to spectral highlights which obscure the fine details of hard and soft dental structures, whilst providing a high contrast / hyper-saturated dental image to be objectively analyzed. This imaging technique, which is non-contact and non-invasive is used to enhance the visibility when assessing dental images and has many translation applications.
OBJECTIVES:
o Distinction between reflective and transmissive cross polarized imaging modalities.
o Expand upon the spectrum of applications of cross polarization.
o Understand the direct benefits of cross polarization imaging in the clinical and technical realms.

Consistent shade matching of indirect restorations with natural dentition remains to be a formidable challenge, even for the most experienced of experts. Numerous factors which take adverse effect on the clinical outcome have long been identified. They include operator dependency (subjective shade selection and evaluation), insufficient shade guide coverage of the range of natural tooth shades as well as considerable inconsistencies among manufacturers shading regimes. The eLABor_aid® System was developed to combat these limitations by enabling objective shade communication using cross polarized dental photography in conjunction with a new and innovative digital work flow that will allow the dental ceramist to formulate an individual shade recipe and to measure its accuracy with the help of a digital try-in of the build-up prior to firing. Learn about the future of shade management: capture, calibrate & create!
LEARNING GOALS:
1. Traditional shade communication using visual assessment, what are the pros and cons?
2. Understanding metamerism and its origins.
3. Using a digital single lens camera (DSLR) for objective shade quantification and communication without the use of shade guides.
4. Practical realisation of layered, indirect restorations and clinical examples.

Achievement of aesthetic direct restorations that resemble natural teeth represent a great challenge for our daily practice. Obtaining optimal results with the minimum number of adjustments or repetitions necessarily implies performing a systematic and exhaustive shade analysis.
The dynamic light observation as defined in Bio-Emulation: Visual Synthesis represents the state of the art analysis of light interaction with tooth structures. As such it should become our reference not only for the shade analysis previous to our treatment, but also for the trustworthy final result. Only the restorations that could integrate with different kinds of light (i.e. cross-polarized, transmitted, ultra-violet, diffused, etc) can be considered a true success on the difficult process of emulating nature with dental materials.
The Bio-Emulation advanced photo protocol addresses the challenging task of transforming the dynamic light observation process into a standardised dental photography workflow that allows easy daily recording of this information.

Surgical Photo Documentation , Dr. Krzysztof Chmielewski MOI
Documenting surgical treatment is challenging task. The limited access to the patient, time and surgical theatre restrictions requires from operator and photographer cooperation and coordination. Bleeding, soft tissue management, positioning of the instruments, cleaning - all these factors and more creates limitations and difficulties in carrying out good quality documentation of surgical treatment. The quality of photo documentation depends on equipment and light. Controlling the light direction and its modification will influence the details visibility in the pictures. The author will present the equipment, accessories, tools, and techniques used in the surgical documentation to obtain the best quality.
